Caterpillar engine fuel system - marine auxiliary diesel engine

The range of larger Caterpillar engines use helix-type fuel pumps driven from a separate camshaft. Their principle of operation can be followed from the description given above, although the pump shown is different in detail. In the smaller range engine a sleeve metered fuel pump, unique to Caterpillar, is used.

A sleeve-metered fuel injection pump is shown in Figure 7.9a) and cross-sections of the plunger are shown in Figure 7.9b.

The cams and plungers are completely immersed in diesel oil supplied under pressure. The diesel oil can enter the space above the plunger whenever either the fuel inlet port 5 or the fuel outlet port 9 is uncovered. The cam 12 moves the plunger 7 through a constant stroke. The fuel outlet port 9 in the plunger is uncovered earlier or later in the stroke by sleeve 8 controlled by sleeve control lever 10 which is positioned by the engine governor. This controls the spill point of the pump.
